THE GASLAMP KILLER (Brainfeeder Records, Low End Theory, USA)

The Gaslamp Killer is a Los Angeles-based DJ whose eclectic animal style ranges from psychedelia and world music to dubstep and left-field hip-hop. Associated with Flying Lotus Brainfeeder Records, he made his production debut in the late 2000s with a series of EPs.

Born William Benjamin Bensussen, he originally comes from San Diego, CA, whose downtown Gaslamp District’s bar scene inspired him to name himself The Gaslamp Killer in disgust for much of the patronage. But his real home is behind the turntables, where his wild style takes DJing into the realm of freak fest psychedelia.

Upon relocating to Los Angeles, he found a niche for himself amid the city’s massive underground party scene and ultimately found a home for himself as a resident DJ at the club Low End Theory, which resulted in a series of club-sponsored podcasts. He also released a series of mix CDs, among them Gaslamp Killers (2007), Its a Rocky Road (2007), I Spit On Your Grave (2008), Hell and the Lake of Fire Are Waiting For You! (2009) and All Killer (2009), the latter a label showcase for the London-based world psychedelia imprint Finders Keepers Records.

As a producer, The Gaslamp Killer made his debut in the late 2000s, releasing, a split single with Free the Robots The Killer Robots, in 2008 and EP My Troubled Mind in 2009.

Ghostface Killah - Auckland show in June

Monday, May 18th, 2009

Original Wu Tang Clan member Ghostface Killah will be bringing a live show to Auckland’s Powerstation, Sunday 21st June 2009.

Taking his name from the alias of the primary villain from the film Ninja Checkmate (aka The Mystery of Chess Boxing). Ghostface Killah debuted with the rest of the Clan on the 1993 release of Enter the 36 Chambers, an album that went on to define Hip Hop’s Golden Era. In the early days GFK was a roommate of RZA’a and help bring the other 7 members of the crew together. He is named as Executive Producer on all of the Wu Tang releases.

In 1995, Ghostface guest-starred extensively on fellow Clan member Raekwon’s debut album, Only Built 4 Cuban Linx…, appearing on almost every song. His first solo LP, Ironman, released in 1996 with RZA on production has since been certified Platinum. The album, which debuted at #2 on the Billboard 200, had a more pronounced soul influence than previous Wu-Tang releases, and Ghostface’s future albums would continue to feature this stylistic trait. Ghost has since released 6 solo albums the most recent being The Big Doe Rehab in 2007.

Alluding to tension between Clan members Ghost told The Village Voice that RZA’s production on the 2007 Wu Tang Album 8 Diagrams was

“fumbling the ball…his music wasn’t sounding like how it was when we first came in.”

Ghost also went on to release his latest solo album, The Big Doe Rehab, on the same day as 8 Diagrams.

Full Pitchfork article here.

In response to a question asking if the Wu Tang Clan are going to relase a follow up to 8 Diargams, Raekwon has this to say:

“Everybody’s doing different things right now — you got Meth coming out with an album, you got Ghostface coming out with an album, some guys working on their projects, some guys getting into the film world, everybody is multi-tasking right now.”

Full Rolling Stone interview here.

An Australian music website dropped a hint on possible support from Ghost mentioning fans there would

“get their chance to witness this powerhouse of modern day hip-hop live across the country backed up onstage by back up fellow Theodore Unit artists Wigs, Trife, Du Lilz and DJ J-Love”

For Auckland ticket sales, Ticketmaster.co.nz (who usually do tickets for the Powerstation) recommend signing up to their site and ticking the Ghostface Killah box to receive a notification once tickets go on sale. Sources have confirmed this will be a R18 show.

Flying Lotus playing NZ in Jan + Essential Mix

Tuesday, December 23rd, 2008

Experimental producer and live laptop musician Flying Lotus is playing a confirmed NZ show in Wellington on January 7th at Sandwiches. There is also talk of a possible Auckland show the following night, big!

For now here’s a little background on the man they call “FlyLo”..

Flying Lotus, (born Steven Ellison) is an experimental music producer, DJ, and laptop musician from Winnetka, California. His debut album, 1983, was released on Plug Research Records in 2006. He is most famous (yet also uncredited) for the music in many of the segues of Cartoon Network’s Adult Swim, and he has also contributed remixes to fellow Plug Research artists, including Mia Doi Todd. Tracing a distinctly Jazz heritage, Flying Lotus is the great-nephew of Alice Coltrane and a cousin of Ravi Coltrane.

He signed to Warp Records in 2007, and, following his Warp-debut - the six track Reset EP - released his second album titled Los Angeles on June 10th, 2008.

With comparisons made to DJ Shadow, Madlib and more often J Dilla and similarities to the wonky Dubstep-esque beats of Scottish producer Rustie or Hyperdub label boss Kode9. Flying Lotus is essentially a producer of future beats. Add to this the live element and its a foregone conclusion that anyone who is interested in electronic music in general needs to know what this guy is up to. Official remix work spanning just the past few months has seen him collaborating with the likes of Lil Wayne as well as Martyn and King Midas Sound. Likewise his beats have recieved the remix treatment from Ras G as well as Japan-based Dubstep producer Quarta330. Taking in so many of the styles we love the BPM family are definitely amped to have the one like FlyLo visiting our shores this summer!

A few quotes:

“There are moments of absolute brilliance spread across this long awaited 17 track album, and its those tracks that refuse to settle comfortably into any recognisable genre that give credence to the assertion that Steven Ellison is one of the most gifted and interesting producers operating in hip hop at the tail end of the noughties. […] Flying lotus joins the dots between the lo-slung loop edits of J Dilla, the low-end ruffage of some of the most interesting dubstep/2-step producers, and the de-tuned, frayed sounds of old pirate radio cassettes that are so worn out they’re starting to lose pitch. At it’s best, the album marries an aesthetically open mind with ridiculously impressive production savvy..”

Boomkat.com review.

“..showcasing the unsteady breaks and choppy noises that are leading people such as Portishead’s Geoff Barrow to mention his name in the same sentence as Public Enemy, EPMD, Marley Marl and Madlib.”

Remix Magazine.

“As he played, Ellison bobbed furiously, with an enormous smile on his face, twisting knobs but looking as if he wanted to dance as much as physically possible without abandoning his equipment. The set segued into his own gentle, loopy remix of Lil Wayne’s ubiquitous “A Milli” and then settled into several brutish, heavy tracks from the dubstep genre—rough-cut slabs of bass and drums that bully the listener into dancing. Then Ellison guided the music back through more rapping, and ended with the susurration of the Radiohead remix. At no point did Ellison feel compelled to make sense. At no point did the crowd stop dancing.”

Sasha Frere-Jones, The New Yorker Magazine.
