“We wanted the fabric CD to be like the best podcast we’ve ever done. That was our aim. When we were asked to do it, we approached all the people making music we love, and asked them to write us something special for the CD. Distance, Scuba, Genotype, myself and Instra:mental all did it. It’s a great collection of music, harmonically it all works together; and as much as we have different styles, you’d be surprised what tunes stick together just from being in key. We wanted to showcase what it is that we’re doing, and what the sound is capable of.” – dBridge

Fabricfirst members will be get this from 1st February 2010, with the CD available on general release worldwide from 15th February 2010.

RSD and Oogun upcoming NZ Tour

RSD Auckland Webflyer

RSD (Tectonic / Earwax / Punch Drunk / UK)

RSD aka Rob Smith shaper of what has become known as the “Bristol Sound”. He has released music as Smith & Mighty, More Rockers, Blue & Red and RSD.

His productions run from the Rootsy, steppas vibes with traditional stabs and echo-chamber vocals to robust and menacing techier sounds. His tunes receive DJ support from Pinch, Distance, Cyrus, Appleblim, Joker, Peverelist and many more.

Dubstep Alliance resident selector Oogun will be supporting RSD at each show as he gears up for the first release on his soon to launch Drunk Elephant Sound imprint.

RSD and Oogun Tour dates:

Wellington - Thursday 19th March @ Sandwiches - with Oogun and Strictly 138.

Dunedin - Friday 20th March @ Sammys - with Oogun, Dapht One and L Que.

Auckland - Wednesday 25th March @ 4:20 - with Oogun, Dapht One and guests.

RSD (Rob Smith, Smith and Mighty UK)

RSD, perhaps better known as Bristol bass and drum music stalwart Rob Smith (one half of respected production duo Smith and Mighty), has been pushing bass heavy rhythms for more than two decades.

Under the moniker RSD, Rob Smith produces fresh, innovative bass music that simultaneously pays dues to his deep soundsystem roots while pushing things ever forward. He remains firmly at the forefront of Bristol’s endlessly inventive music scene.

With a staggering discography and a range of projects encompassing dub, drum and bass, 2-step and dubstep, Rob Smith has has his finger squarely on the bass-pulse. From his musical beginnings playing guitar in local roots reggae band Restriction, Rob’s music has always had a strong dub aesthetic. Forming the, now legendary, production duo Smith and Mighty with collaborator Ray Mighty in 1987, the pair’s early releases on the Three Stripe label were influential in laying the groundwork for both the trip hop and jungle scenes for which Bristol would become renowned. A period of chart success and major label involvement in the early nineties was followed by a return to their underground roots for Smith and Mighty. During this time they worked with Peter D. Rose to release groundbreaking music on their More Rockers imprint. Rob Smith also went on to collaborate with local roots reggae producers Henry & Louis. This fruitful relationship culminated in 2001 with the release of the fantastic, yet criminally overlooked ‘Time Will Tell’ LP.

Smith and Mighty’s addictive 2002 jump-up vocal cut “B-line fi blow” featuring Niji 40 may still be firmly lodged in many listeners’ brains.

Rob Smith has found a new home in 2009, as RSD, comfortably adapting to the rolling, sub-heavy rhythms of dubstep. With releases on respected labels including Punch Drunk, Earwax and Tectonic, RSD’s sound is typified by impossibly heavy soundsystem-testing sub-lines and junglist dub breaks. The irresistible energy of tunes such as 2007’s infectious breaky roller “Pretty Bright Lights”, 2008’s bubbling summer-vibed “Speakerbox” and the speaker destroying dread-fuelled stepper “Jahway” has rapidly cemented them as anthems.

An experienced, effortless and exhilirating DJ and selector, RSD’s New Zealand shows are not to be missed.

OoGuN (Drunk Elephant Sound, Dubstep Alliance AK)

OoGuN relocated from London late in 2006 and has fast become one of NZ’s top dubstep DJ/Producers - as anyone who has witnessed his live DJ sets will attest. Packing fresh dubplates from 6Blocc, DZ, Babylon System, RSD, Clouds, Mungo’s Hi Fi, Roommate, Antiserum and others as well as exclusive OoGuN productions, remixes and the freshest NZ dubs - OoGuN will celebrating the imminent launch of his Drunk Elephant Sound Aotearoa record label. Prepare to be trampled!

Drunk Elephant Sound is a 100% Aotearoa owned and operated dubstep label.

Drunk Elephant was set up by Auckland based producer and DJ OoGuN, initially as a home for his dubstep productions. However, as dubstep grows in NZ, with increasing numbers of homegrown producers picking up the sound, Drunk Elephant’s mission is to find and encourage NZ Dubstep producers by releasing their tunes. OoGuN’s weekly radio show (the Drunk Elephant Soundsystem Base Fm 107.3 Sundays 8-10pm) has been instrumental in gathering and broadcasting locally made Dubstep music from producers such as P Vans, Dutty Ranks, L Que and J Red, Frosty Boy, Joint Forces and of course OoGuN’s own productions. In the first phase, Drunk Elephant functioned purely as an online, digital label. However in 2009, the label is being launched as a full entity with planned vinyl releases.

RSD

“For me, Dubstep is maybe one of the most exciting things to happen musically - not just in Bristol, but in the UK and world wide. It’s comparable to the excitement of the Jungle movement in the early 90’s and it’s a bit like a musical ’conclusion’ in a similar way that Jungle was, but with a broader scope of styles, sounds and attitudes. It seems to be influenced in a kind of butterfly effect way by all the people who love it. Other periods that were exciting and important for me were the punk/reggae of the late 70’s/early 80’s and the early rave/free party period.” - RSD

 Remarc Poster

“CALLING ALL JUNGLE, DRUM N BASS AND DUBSTEP HEADS”

JAPM in Association with Base FM are excited to present

REMARC - “KING OF THE JUNGLE!!”

Thurs 4th December RISING SUN K’rd Auckland

This legendary producer/DJ needs little introduction but for those that don’t know;

UK DJ REMARC is widely proclaimed to be “king of the Amen” and “a pioneer of ragga jungle” due to his chopped up tracks for legendary labels such as Dollar, White House, Kemet, Labbello Blanco and Suburban Base.

Recently the majority of these tunes were compiled alongside previously unreleased dub plates for a two volume retrospective released by the highly acclaimed Planet Mu label. The re-releases of these classics soon moved as many units if not more than a successful drum n bass release proving that Remarc and the Jungle sound is still an unstoppable force in the game. It has recently introduced him to the world of other electronic music and a new generation of Junglists and amen mashers worldwide

With tracks appearing on over 111 releases there is no questioning that if you have not heard of Remarc, its time to open your ears to the founding father of the amen sound. For those familiar with the legend he is still spinning Jungle (oldskool and new) worldwide and is becoming equally known for his DJ skills and nasty dub plate specials.

2008 projects include the birth of his new record label Definition Recordings and a world tour to promote the sound

There is no doubt big things are on the horizon for the man that is passionate about what he does and is dedicated to flying the flag for Jungle - the sound and the scene.

For his definition recordings tour Remarc will be packing all of his classics mostly in exclusive VIP form as well as some very special remixes of other artists work - Add to this unheard dublates from his new label - and we’re Guaranteed a night of cutting edge amen pressure!!

So don’t miss this opportunity to witness the first and possibly only time the jungle legend touches down in Auckland.

Yardcore 2 Flyer

Hey a cupley nights on this Friday that are defo worth checking.. Fucking Yardcore in its second mutation and now at the Rising Sun will feature some Dancehall goodness early in the night from Jah Praise then a feature Jungle and Tech Step mashup from Niche and Manaia Toa before easing ya through with some fresh Dubstep from Phil O (among other selectors). The regular drumandbass.co.nz monthly night at Coherant on K’Rd was meant to feature a set a liquid goodness from the one like DJ Kritical this month but due the sad circumstance of him taking his own life just two weeks ago it will now feature a studio mix of his in reverence before the headline set from Christchurch’s Urban Notion crew. I’m sure there will be a big massive in attendance to see the one like Kritical out in style. Looking ahead there is the Kiwiburn festival (inspired by the legendary Burning Man held in Nevada, USA) upcoming February 1st-4th at Whakamaru Domain, Mangakino and the Splore bi-annual festival upcoming February 8-10th at Tapapakanga Regional Park, Orere.
