This recent interview with Australian online magazine ‘In The Mix’ cuts to the chase:

In The Mix: For people who might not have heard this genre before, what can Australian audiences expect when you play here?

Pinch: Deep, highly infectious upfront strains of the dubstep virus – bass weight that will penetrate your immune system and develop symbiotic relations with your pre-concsious mind. Err… or failing that, some good tunes I have in the bag to run on dubplate.

Stevie Hyper D (RIP)

Wednesday, July 4th, 2007

Stevie Hyper D, jungle don, undisputed legend, unsung hero and one of the greatest dance floor MCs to have ever lived passed on from this realm 9 years ago to this day.

Stevie_Rockin

As often happens with people who are larger than life, Stevie is often remembered for how he died (or may have died) rather than the way he lived. As an MC myself I’ve found Stevie’s rhymes to be an inspiration as to how one may push the envelope and develop as an artist. I’ve collected some content together here for anyone interested in checking out some of Stevie’s groundbreaking mic work. And to counter the loads of inane comments that can be found in YouTube video pages etcetera here is one of the better researched accounts around of Stevie’s last 24 hours from a now defunct website:

On July 4th, 1998, the world lost one of its finest MC’s, the man Drum & Bass bowed down before, Stevie Hyper D. A lot of rumors were started and the press had a field day blaming the notorious Rave scene (as per usual) for it’s uninhibited use of ecstasy and what ever else they dribble about. So to put some rumors to rest, I have done my homework and this is what I came up with……………………………….
On a cool Friday night in a Maidstone bar, the worlds greatest MC was tearing up the mic on a mad set. During drinks (and allegedly some lines) afterwards, he complained to some friends he was not feeling well and later due to a long running heart problem, he left with his girlfriend.
That morning, Saturday, July 4th, 1998, Stevie Hyper D died in his bed from what the coroner found was a Cardiac Arrest, not a cocaine overdose although what triggered the attack was inconclusive. Within a month the greatest DJ’s and MC’s in the Jungle game gathered to honor Stevie in a way only they know how, you can see the flyer below. (more…)

Kode 9 Mixtape and Spaceape Interview

Tuesday, July 3rd, 2007

A couple of treats I thought I’d share with you folks this week. Firstly a slightly sideways interview of The Spaceape and the masked crusader filmed outside the Mutek festival in Montreal recently. The interviewer tends to try a bit hard but its still worth a watch or two. And then a deliriously good mixtape from Dubstep don Kode9 as promotion for his and Space Ape’s performance at the recent Sonar festival where they played Mary Anne Hobbes’ Dubstep showcase alongside Oris Jay aka Darquan. My favorites on the first few listens were Kode’s ‘Find My Way’ remix, Cluekid & Cotti’s ‘Sensi Dub VIP’ and the Warrior Queen ‘F_ck You’ colab.. Turn it up foolz!
