RAMADANMAN (UK)

DUBSTEP ALLSTARS VOL. 7

REPRESENTING:

HESSLE AUDIO | SWAMP 81 | TEMPA | APPLE PIPS | SOUL JAZZ | 2ND DROP | HEMLOCK | SUB FM

Its four years since dubstep passed its tipping point and went from tight knit London community to global scene. It is now as accepted by LA ravers as London jazz heads, vocalled by pop stars as diverse as La Roux and Snoop Dogg. And if the first wave of dubsteppers (El-B, Zed Bias, Horsepower) took the swing of garage and made it darker and the second (Hatcha, Skream, Benga, Digital Mystikz & Loefah) re-engineered its DNA into a genre with its own identity, then in many ways Ramadanman is representative of many key ‘third wave’ players.

Brought up in the rural south west of England, far from dubstep’s south London birthplace, he learnt to mix at 13 but first encountered dubstep when his grime-inspired productions were compared online to a genre he’d yet to hear of. After investigating, he attended dubstep’s foundational club, Forward>>, and had, as many people do, a life-changing experience. “I first went in April 2006 when Mala was playing alongside N Type and maybe Geeneus I think. Definitely changed my life!” he enthuses. “Really exciting vibe, the heaviest soundsystem I had ever heard and just really changed my outlook on music. I don’t think I realised sub bass existed before then.”

True to the community spirit of the genre, he left Forward>> not just with a new found musical direction but people to share the enthusiasm for it with: when he subsequently arrived at Leeds University to study languages, he found some of those friends he’d made in the cold, east London queue were also there too. It would be from Leeds University that he and his friends, Ben UFO and Pangaea, would begin a label (Hessle Audio) that would see them take their sound all over the globe.

“Hessle is becoming more and more a group of mates really,” says Ramadanman. “We’ve all known each other a good few years now… We all play a part in choosing tunes and discussing release plans. Sometimes one of us can become excited about a particular tune, and then the other two hear it and are like ‘nah this isn’t actually very good’ which keeps us all in check I feel. Quite a democratic approach really. We played in Berlin last week, all of us, and it was just really nice having a laugh with mates.”

Ramadanman represents the maturing dubstep sound emotionally contained and controlled, the diametric opposite of the explosive adolescent wobble tantrums that now dominate parts of the scene. As the distance from drop-culture widens you can see how its global appeal has expanded beyond the genre, as it cosies up to groove-lead scenes like techno and house. “I think there’s a danger of some technoey dubstep stuff just sounding like techno at 140bpm and not really differentiating itself from the years of techno that have preceded it. I’m not so much influenced by techno these days really,” he admits. Yet you can’t help but feel that, perhaps, it has left part of its DNA behind.

Rama has racked up scene defining releases on labels including Soul Jazz, Tempa, Aus, Critical Music and Hessle Audio, the imprint he co-runs with Pangaea and Ben UFO, as well as remixing the likes of Ragga Twins, Scuba and many more. He is also heavily involved in organizing the Leeds night Ruffage as well as co-hosting the now infamous Ruffage Sessions weekly internet radio show on Sub FM.

With fans spanning the dance music divide – including Ricardo Villalobos, Skream, Francois K, Kode9, Bok Bok, Gilles Peterson and Rob da Bank – Ramadanman’s bright future is all but assured.

Rama’s latest release ‘Fall Short / Work Them’ is out this week on Swamp 81.

Beats People Movement* present: SCUBA (HOTFLUSH/UK) - WED 14TH JULY @ JUICE BAR

Saturday, June 12th, 2010

Beats People Movement* and Dubstep Alliance Aotearoa are proud to bring international guest and Dubstep original don Paul Rose aka SCUBA to Auckland for a special Steppas Unite! Dubstep Wednesdays presentation..

SCUBA (UK)

RESIDENT ADVISOR TOP 100 DJ 2009

REPRESENTING:

HOTFLUSH | NINJA TUNE | SOUL JAZZ | BREAKBEAT SCIENCE | OFFSHORE | NAKED LUNCH

Scuba is the production and DJ alias of Paul Rose, curator of Hotflush Recordings, one of the original Dubstep labels which released some of the most important tracks of the genre’s formative period and continues to be a source of constant originality to date. Originally from London, Scuba relocated to Berlin in 2007, a move which (according to some) influenced his critically acclaimed debut album, A Mutual Antipathy (2008). The stylistic synergy of the album cemented his position as one of the most forward-thinking Dubstep producers. The project was subsequently completed with a series of remixes by Surgeon, Substance, Jamie Vex’d, Martyn, Marcel Dettmann and the artist himself under his House / Techno-centred SCB guise. His second album, Triangulation, is slated for release on Hotflush in March 2010. More recently he has been busy remixing artists including Fever Ray and Red Snapper, releasing fresh material including the highly-acclaimed Aesaunic EP on Hotflush and Speak/Negative on Naked Lunch. He has also developed the SCB project with a seminal mix for the MNML SSGS blog and a first proper 12”. In addition to label and production duties, he also runs the massively successful SUB:STANCE night at Berlin’s Techno Mecca, Berghain, the sound of which he committed to plastic in a DJ mix released on Ostgut Ton in January 2010. From playing a part in the formative years of the sound on the pirate airwaves in London, to working dancefloors across the globe, to a swathe of excellent releases on Hotflush and the high profile Soul Jazz imprint, Scuba brings his own unique musicality to the Dubstep sound. Always fresh and innovative, Scuba’s recent output is at once melodic and musical and devastatingly heavy. The Hotflush label has been a creative incubator for some of the most original and foward-thinking producers in dubstep including the likes of Distance, Joy orbison, Mount Kimbie, Pangea, Loefah, Toasty, Slaughter Mob, Vaccine, Gravious, Marlow, Boxcutter and Jazzsteppa. Hotflush along with Paul Rose’s other imprints - Abucs, Scuba and HF2 - can always be relied on to push the Dubstep sound in new and exciting directions. With his new full length artist album “Triangulation”, topping charts all over the world, and already being hailed as a masterwork - Scuba’s record bag will be bursting with exclusive dubs of uncompromising calibre.

The Gaslamp Killer (USA) @ Toto Bacco Room, Thursday 25th February

Saturday, January 30th, 2010

The Gaslamp Killer is touring NZ in February and Beats People Movement have been lucky enough to secure an exclusive Auckland show !!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

THE GASLAMP KILLER (Brainfeeder Records, Low End Theory, USA)

The Gaslamp Killer is a Los Angeles-based DJ whose eclectic animal style ranges from psychedelia and world music to dubstep and left-field hip-hop. Associated with Flying Lotus Brainfeeder Records, he made his production debut in the late 2000s with a series of EPs.

Born William Benjamin Bensussen, he originally comes from San Diego, CA, whose downtown Gaslamp District’s bar scene inspired him to name himself The Gaslamp Killer in disgust for much of the patronage. But his real home is behind the turntables, where his wild style takes DJing into the realm of freak fest psychedelia.

Upon relocating to Los Angeles, he found a niche for himself amid the city’s massive underground party scene and ultimately found a home for himself as a resident DJ at the club Low End Theory, which resulted in a series of club-sponsored podcasts. He also released a series of mix CDs, among them Gaslamp Killers (2007), Its a Rocky Road (2007), I Spit On Your Grave (2008), Hell and the Lake of Fire Are Waiting For You! (2009) and All Killer (2009), the latter a label showcase for the London-based world psychedelia imprint Finders Keepers Records.

As a producer, The Gaslamp Killer made his debut in the late 2000s, releasing, a split single with Free the Robots The Killer Robots, in 2008 and EP My Troubled Mind in 2009.

When we were asked to do it, we approached all the people making music we love, and asked them to write us something special for the CD. Distance, Scuba, Genotype, myself and Instra:mental all did it. It’s a great collection of music, harmonically it all works together; and as much as we have different styles, you’d be surprised what tunes stick together just from being in key. We wanted to showcase what it is that we’re doing, and what the sound is capable of.” – dBridge

Headhunter launches new label Transistor

Monday, October 26th, 2009

Marking the debut release on Headhunter’s Transistor imprint, the French crossover producer F displays his best work to date with Night Dive. Electrifying dub-techno synths and rolling dance floor drums put this tune into any peak time dj’s set. On the flip is a collaborative workout with Tempa’s Headhunter. Tested the world over this track delivers what the party wants. Rave stabs, rolling bassline and tripped out sci-fi effects sets the mood for this atmospheric roller. DJ Support from; Youngsta, RSD, 2562, Scuba, Mary Anne Hobbs, Appleblim, Jack Sparrow, DJG, ItalTek

You will remember Headhunter for the blazing set he laid down for us in March. Whats that you missed it? Shame brudda shaaame!

Some quick background - Headhunter started doing a grime show on a pirate station in the St Pauls district before starting a label with Tech Itch. Soon after that Tempa signed him on as an exclusive artist and now he’s blazing a trail with psychedelic and techno influenced Dubstep tracks that get regular support from Youngsta et al. Coming into contact with so much good music has led him to start his own label up. The first release featured a solo track and Dedale a colab with French producer F. Check out The Blog Of Headhunter for more info on what the man is up to including info on his live sets incorporating Ableton and his own personal VJ - a guy by the name of Lex..

Headhunter LIVE AV Dubstep / Techno Performance @ Stuk, Belgium from VectorMeldrew on Vimeo. Here’s an excerpt from a recent interview in Knowledge:

Why have you started your own label, Transistor?
I get sent so much stuff that I feel has a similar sound to what I do I can’t help but want to put it out under my own label. It’s just a natural progression really.

What’s the concept behind the label?
No concept as such, at the moment I’m aiming to put out an artist and then put either a remix or a collab from myself on the flip.

How often will you put out releases and which other artists will be on the label?
I’ll aim for every six months, the first release is with F, the second is DJG and the third is Jus Wan. I guess I’m taking it as it comes and trying to move with the times, pushing the sound of dubstep to newer and different levels

Tell us more about your first single with French producer F…

This tune is the reason I stated a label really. I had the F tune ‘Night Dive’ for a few months and I realised I needed to put it out. So a year later it’s finally come out and seen the light of day. F does have an album coming out sometime soon too, so do look out for that, not on my Transistor label but on the 7even label.

Three fresh and recommended funky mixes

Tuesday, October 6th, 2009

Scratcha DVA CRAZYLEGS 004.1 (Crazy Legs vs Dirty Canvas Mix)

First up, a man that needs little introduction. Traditionally one of grime’s elite producers, the brilliant host of Rinse.fm’s controversial breakfast show and newest signing to Kode 9’s dubstep flagship label Hyperdub - we bring to you half an hour of the hardest, most twisted UK funky (some might call it “funkstep”) from man like SCRATCHA DVA.

At Scratcha’s request, we can’t publish the tracklist for this mix, but rest assured it is SICK. Tracks from Proxy and Major Lazer jump out as a real indicator where his sound is going at the moment - cold, mechanical beats and distorted bass stabs expertly blended together with deeper UK sounds to satisfy house heads and bass fiends alike. This is something very different, and very special.

The Heatwave’s Funky Bashment Mix

Recent months have seen a whole lot of hullabaloo surrounding the burgeoning UK funky house scene (including our current issue’s cover story), but significantly less attention has been given to how these rhythms are intermingling with the world of dancehall. In search of more information, not to mention a sampling of new music, we turned to The Heatwave, the London-based DJ and production crew headed by Gabriel Myddelton that has spent much of the decade firmly planted on dancehall and reggae’s bleeding edge. Besides running a highly informative blog and frequently performing around the UK, The Heatwave also hosts a weekly show on pirate radio mainstay Rinse FM. Airing on Thursdays from 1-3 a.m. GMT and featuring plenty of dancehall, the show has also become a premiere showcase for funky bashment, the combination of dancehall MCs with riddims both pilfered from and inspired by the world of UK funky. If the idea of heavy hitters like Busy Signal, Sean Paul, Vybz Kartel, and Warrior Queen spitting over tropical beats from Crazy Cousinz and Hard House Banton gets you excited, then this exclusive mix, composed almost entirely of unreleased tunes, is not one to be missed.

Roska October Podcast Mix for XLR8R

Anyone who’s read our current cover story knows that we here at XLR8R are digging the underground sounds of London and all the ways that UK funky is intermingling with dubstep, house, and other genres. Leading the way are artists like Cooly G, Geeneus, and the author of this week’s podcast, Roska. In the span of just a handful of releases and remixes, many on his own Roska Kicks & Snares imprint, the man born Wayne Goodlitt has developed a trademark sound, highlighted by hard-hitting, syncopated drum beats and a proclivity toward upfront percussion. This mix finds Roska combining many of his own creations with a mixture of unreleased heaters and a few of this nascent scene’s biggest tunes.

01 Roska “The Sheppard” (Roska Kicks & Snares)
02 Poxymusic feat. Gina Mitchell “War Paint (Claude VonStroke Remix)” (Hussle)
03 Roska & Jamie George “Love 2 Nite (Roska Dub Mix)” (Roska Kicks & Snares)
04 Cooly G “Love Dub Refix” (Hyperdub)
05 Geeneus “Yellowtail VIP” (Rinse)
06 DVA “Nasty Nasty Nasty (Roska Remix)” (DVA)
07 The Dark House Project “Ruckas” (Kenzo)
08 Roska & Jamie George “Wonderful Day” (Roska Kicks & Snares)
09 Roska “Holograph” (Fantastic 4)
10 Shortstuff “Tripped Up” (Ramp)
11 Roska “Gone To A Better Place (Malice Deepstramental Mix)” (Roska Kicks & Snares)

Consequence LP forthcoming on Exit Records UK

Saturday, October 3rd, 2009

NZ DnB export Consequence has the release party for his forthcoming LP in Melbourne next weekend. The LP sampler is out as of last week on Exit Records (EXIT 017), the LP is due for release later this month. Consequence will also be playing at the Phat 10 New Years Eve festival along with Exit Records boss D Bridge.

Polaroid are proud to present the global launch for the debut album ‘Live for Never’ from New Zealand drum & bass artist Consequence. Released in October on Exit Records this album crosses all sonic boundaries, featuring collaborations with dBridge, Instra:mental & ASC.

“I aimed to create music that doesn’t fit the usual mould of drum & bass, yet has its ties and influences from it,” says Consequence. “When listening to the LP in its entirety, I hope that listeners will be given an insight into the way I see my surroundings. Maybe people can relate, everyone shares certain similarities in the way they feel about their life and what makes them feel certain emotions.”

The launch party takes place on Friday 9th October with Consequence, MC LowQui, Joe Seven and Dust at Miss Libertine, 34 Franklin Street, Melbourne, Australia. $10 b4 11pm / Members. $15 after 11pm.

The latest in the Electronic Exploration series sees Ben UFO from Hessle Audio take the wheel (or is that wheels?). Ben UFO also has some tasty drumfunk mixes floating around from a few years back. At 23 years young he is definitely finding his feet at a good time for the progression of the sound known as Dubstep.

BenUFO runs Hessle Audio with Ramadanman and Pangaea.
