New Flying Lotus LP Cosmogramma coming out May 2010

Sunday, March 14th, 2010

Hip-hop experimentalist Flying Lotus will release his third album, Cosmogramma, this spring on Warp Records.

It will be the LA producer’s first full-length since Los Angeles, the strange and brilliant post-hip-hop record that took the music world by surprise upon its release in summer of 2008. The album received top ratings here at Resident Advisor and gushing accolades from Pitchfork, Spin and Mary Anne Hobbs, who went so far as to call Flying Lotus “the Hendrix of his generation.”

Riding the success of his previous album, Flying Lotus managed to nail down some very interesting collaborators for Cosmogramma—most notably, Thom Yorke of Radiohead, who sings on the track “…And The World Laughs With You.” As the nephew of Alice Coltrane, FlyLo has also managed to recruit a few acclaimed jazz and classical musicians, including former Suicidal Tendencies bassist Stephen “Thundercat” Bruno and harp virtuoso Rebekah Raff, who appeared previously with Flying Lotus on the track “Auntie’s Harp.”

Musically, Cosmogramma shows Flying Lotus further perfecting his trippy and syncopated style of electronic beats. In an interview with Pitchfork Media, he said: “I’m finally getting to the point where I can make the kind of records that I want to make—that I wanted to make when I was younger, things that I dreamed about making. It’s this fusion-y kind of thing where all the elements of the music that I love are there.”

Breakage’s new LP Foundation and that Burial colab

Saturday, March 13th, 2010

Donaeo can produce, MC, sing… and act!!! The full package! One of the greatest UK artists in recent decades.

Amazing video. Big up Shy FX, Digital Soundboy is running tings…

While the above is very flattering I think it’s safe to say Donae’o is a stand-out breakthrough artist at the minute and defiantly one to watch in future. He features on two tracks Speechless, shown above and Riot Music. The 12 inch release of Riot Music came out this week and features a 145 bpm remix from Skream.

Donaeo - Riot Music - Skreamix by SKREAMIZMOther notable tracks on the album include Hard, a reworking of the anthem Together Ft. David Rodigan with additional vocals from Grime outfit Newham Generals which I blogged about back in October. Another interesting colab is with DnB emcee Kemo. Listen to it here:

Temper (Breakage ft. KEMO) by KEMO MC

Foundation Tracklisting:

  1. Open Up
  2. Hardcore Music (Interlude)
  3. Hard feat. Newham Generals & David Rodigan
  4. Digiboy Radio (Interlude)
  5. Old Skool Ting
  6. Squid Bass (Interlude)
  7. Run Em Out feat. Roots Manuva
  8. Temper feat. Kemo
  9. Over feat. Zarif
  10. Higher
  11. Foundation
  12. Justified feat. Erin
  13. Vial feat. Burial
  14. Speechless feat. Donae’o
  15. If… (Interlude)

Breakage has also remixed a track called Paradise Circus from Massive Attack’s forthcoming album Heligoland and you can download it right here for free. (Right Click, Save As).

One of the more notable tracks on the album is Vial, a collaboration with low-key Londoner Burial.

Online retailer Boomkat had this to say about the track:

“Blatantly, the Burial link-up on ‘Vial’ is one of the biggest attractions. Thankfully, it’s also worth the investment too, finding solid ground between Burial’s quicksilver slink and Breakage’s tuff bass-sculpting.”

Pitchfork had a different perspective:

“”Vial” is more sedate than those tracks, and in its arrangement of heavy bass over a ghostly instrumental, sounds, well, a lot like a Burial song. It has all the hallmarks of Bevan’s work: 2-step sputter, manipulated vocals, and distant, clattering percussion. There’s nothing wrong with “Vial” per se, but it seems odd that Burial would want to collaborate on what’s essentially a paint-by-the-numbers reworking of the style he so successfully concocted with Untrue. If anything, it makes you even more curious about what he’s been cooking up in the meantime.”

Listen to it here:

Some other recent Burial collaborations you might not have heard of include an untitled track with Flying Lotus and another with Garage producer El-B, forthcoming on the Nu Levels label. Breakage’s album Foundation officially drops on March 22, we should have our preorder copies in store a little earlier on March 18th with restocks arriving March 25th.

Digital Mystikz - Return II Space - Coming May 2010

Friday, March 12th, 2010

Big tings in the works from the DMZ camp. I was talking to Coki when he was here in October about whether there was a likely Digital Mystikz album in the works. I was under strict instructions not to let on that he and Mala were working on a full length debut. Seems safe to let the cat out of the bag now. Trust me this is going to be good. Foundation style.

Mala has revealed details of Digital Mystikz‘ first release 2010, and it’s a big one.

Return II Space will be released on 3×12? vinyl in May. Given the catalogue number is DMZLP001, it’s safe to call it an album – though whether it’s by Mala alone or with Coki, his partner in Digital Mystikz, is uncertain. The cover art is pictured above.

No tracklist has been made available as yet, but it seems obvious that Mala’s track ‘Return to Space’ will feature.

As a label and production enterprise, DMZ has been quiet of late, its last official 12? release being Coki’s 2008 offering ‘Triple Six’ / ‘Road Rage’.

Mala hasn’t recorded anything for the label since 2007’s ‘Lean Forward’, choosing instead to focus his energies on his Deep Medi Musik label, which also has an album-length release on the way in the form of Deep Medi Musik Vol. 2, the imprint’s second CD compilation which compiles past singles by Mala, Quest, Silkie and more.

We’ll update you with a tracklist and any additional info as soon as we have it.

Turning off Google buzz

Sunday, March 7th, 2010

A few friend’s have been deactivating their Facebook profiles lately. Facebook’s default settings have been switched so that blissfully unaware users will be sharing everything they post or upload with anyone, anywhere - including search engines. More people are signing up to Twitter every day and the number of ‘followers’ you have looks to be the future of Social Networking mojo. The big guns at Google are of course aware of all this. The new twitter-eque Google Buzz networking tool was switched on last month for the 176 million or so Gmail users worldwide. This has caused a stir up because accounts frequently emailed were automatically ‘followed’, followers can then be viewed by others in your Google ‘Public Profile’. This smelt a big fishy to me and not in keeping with Google’s ‘Don’t Be Evil‘ policy so I ‘unBuzzed’ today. For those asking “how do I unBuzz??” This article has some useful advice. Some related information and discussion on Social Networking’s magic ‘Dunbar Number’ here.

New film from Taika Waititi BOY coming out in March

Tuesday, February 23rd, 2010

New film from my favorite NZ Director, Taika Waititi of Eagle Vs Shark and Two Cars One Night fame. His good mates Bret McKenzie and Jemaine Clement are also the one’s responsible for Flight of the Conchords. The three of them first performed as part of a five-man group called So You’re a Man, in the mid-nineties. I saw Taika speak at the 2006 Semi Permanent conference in Auckland where he was by far the best speaker there, art, playwriting, script writing, acting, comedy, this guy can do it all. If you don’t know get to know!

Boy is released on March 25 in New Zealand.
The year is 1984, and on the rural East Coast of New Zealand Thriller is changing kids lives. Inspired by the Oscar nominated Two Cars, One Night, BOY is the hilarious and heartfelt coming-of-age tale about heroes, magic and Michael Jackson.

BOY is a dreamer who loves Michael Jackson. He lives with his brother ROCKY, a tribe of deserted cousins and his Nan.

Boys other hero, his father, ALAMEIN, is the subject of Boys fantasies, and he imagines him as a deep sea diver, war hero and a close relation of Michael Jackson (he can even dance like him). In reality hes in the can for robbery.
When Alamein returns home after 7 years away, Boy is forced to confront the man he thought he remembered, find his own potential and learn to get along without the hero he had been hoping for.

Starring Te Aho Eketone-Whitu, James Rolleston, Taika Waititi

Directed/Written by Taika Waititi (’Eagle Vs Shark’, TV’s ‘Flight of the Conchords’)

THE GASLAMP KILLER (Brainfeeder Records, Low End Theory, USA)

The Gaslamp Killer is a Los Angeles-based DJ whose eclectic animal style ranges from psychedelia and world music to dubstep and left-field hip-hop. Associated with Flying Lotus Brainfeeder Records, he made his production debut in the late 2000s with a series of EPs.

Born William Benjamin Bensussen, he originally comes from San Diego, CA, whose downtown Gaslamp District’s bar scene inspired him to name himself The Gaslamp Killer in disgust for much of the patronage. But his real home is behind the turntables, where his wild style takes DJing into the realm of freak fest psychedelia.

Upon relocating to Los Angeles, he found a niche for himself amid the city’s massive underground party scene and ultimately found a home for himself as a resident DJ at the club Low End Theory, which resulted in a series of club-sponsored podcasts. He also released a series of mix CDs, among them Gaslamp Killers (2007), Its a Rocky Road (2007), I Spit On Your Grave (2008), Hell and the Lake of Fire Are Waiting For You! (2009) and All Killer (2009), the latter a label showcase for the London-based world psychedelia imprint Finders Keepers Records.

As a producer, The Gaslamp Killer made his debut in the late 2000s, releasing, a split single with Free the Robots The Killer Robots, in 2008 and EP My Troubled Mind in 2009.
