New film from Taika Waititi BOY coming out in March

Tuesday, February 23rd, 2010

New film from my favorite NZ Director, Taika Waititi of Eagle Vs Shark and Two Cars One Night fame. His good mates Bret McKenzie and Jemaine Clement are also the one’s responsible for Flight of the Conchords. The three of them first performed as part of a five-man group called So You’re a Man, in the mid-nineties. I saw Taika speak at the 2006 Semi Permanent conference in Auckland where he was by far the best speaker there, art, playwriting, script writing, acting, comedy, this guy can do it all. If you don’t know get to know!

Boy is released on March 25 in New Zealand.
The year is 1984, and on the rural East Coast of New Zealand Thriller is changing kids lives. Inspired by the Oscar nominated Two Cars, One Night, BOY is the hilarious and heartfelt coming-of-age tale about heroes, magic and Michael Jackson.

BOY is a dreamer who loves Michael Jackson. He lives with his brother ROCKY, a tribe of deserted cousins and his Nan.

Boys other hero, his father, ALAMEIN, is the subject of Boys fantasies, and he imagines him as a deep sea diver, war hero and a close relation of Michael Jackson (he can even dance like him). In reality hes in the can for robbery.
When Alamein returns home after 7 years away, Boy is forced to confront the man he thought he remembered, find his own potential and learn to get along without the hero he had been hoping for.

Starring Te Aho Eketone-Whitu, James Rolleston, Taika Waititi

Directed/Written by Taika Waititi (’Eagle Vs Shark’, TV’s ‘Flight of the Conchords’)

THE GASLAMP KILLER (Brainfeeder Records, Low End Theory, USA)

The Gaslamp Killer is a Los Angeles-based DJ whose eclectic animal style ranges from psychedelia and world music to dubstep and left-field hip-hop. Associated with Flying Lotus Brainfeeder Records, he made his production debut in the late 2000s with a series of EPs.

Born William Benjamin Bensussen, he originally comes from San Diego, CA, whose downtown Gaslamp District’s bar scene inspired him to name himself The Gaslamp Killer in disgust for much of the patronage. But his real home is behind the turntables, where his wild style takes DJing into the realm of freak fest psychedelia.

Upon relocating to Los Angeles, he found a niche for himself amid the city’s massive underground party scene and ultimately found a home for himself as a resident DJ at the club Low End Theory, which resulted in a series of club-sponsored podcasts. He also released a series of mix CDs, among them Gaslamp Killers (2007), Its a Rocky Road (2007), I Spit On Your Grave (2008), Hell and the Lake of Fire Are Waiting For You! (2009) and All Killer (2009), the latter a label showcase for the London-based world psychedelia imprint Finders Keepers Records.

As a producer, The Gaslamp Killer made his debut in the late 2000s, releasing, a split single with Free the Robots The Killer Robots, in 2008 and EP My Troubled Mind in 2009.

“We wanted the fabric CD to be like the best podcast we’ve ever done. That was our aim. When we were asked to do it, we approached all the people making music we love, and asked them to write us something special for the CD. Distance, Scuba, Genotype, myself and Instra:mental all did it. It’s a great collection of music, harmonically it all works together; and as much as we have different styles, you’d be surprised what tunes stick together just from being in key. We wanted to showcase what it is that we’re doing, and what the sound is capable of.” – dBridge

Fabricfirst members will be get this from 1st February 2010, with the CD available on general release worldwide from 15th February 2010.

This weeks New Releases..

Tuesday, October 13th, 2009

A excerpt of “the wordy bit” from this weeks realease mailer, if you live in NZ and are a Dubstep or Drum n Bass head drop us a line to sign up.

Plenty of quality releases on the sheets this week. The 2562 album is of particular note. We have put together a night “Dubstyle BBQ” happening this Friday at Supper Club would be great to see you all there. Flyer attached, facebook event page is here.

We recommend 2562’s ‘Unbalance’ CD/LP on Tectonic. Blending the sonic barriers between Dubstep and whatever. Wicked stuff.

Tectonic boss Pinch says: “I’ve worked closely with 2562 over the last few years and I can honestly say that Unbalance is an incredible album – it’s one of the most exciting releases that Tectonic has seen to date - it vastly exceeds the already high standard he set himself with Aerial.”

Check 2562’s FACT podcast here.

On the deep tip Quest “The Unknown” on Deep Medi Musik is getting lots of play round our way. Wedge & Shadz Running Away b/w the Guido remix is also with a listen. Ital Tek also comes through with ‘Mako EP’ for the launch of his Atom River label. Check previews and a free download of one of the tracks here: http://www.atomriver.co.uk/
Omitted from last week’s mention was F & Headhunter ‘Night Drive / Dedale’ on Headhunter’s new label Transistor, more info here.

Wobblers will want to check the new Hench promo of Chasing Shadows ‘Ill / Amirah’ as well as Emalkay’s big tune “When I Look at You” on Dub Police. I’d also recommend Kutz ‘Glithcy Finger / Twilight Zone’ on N-Type’s Wheel & Deal Records. All 3 are finish copy promos. Lots of Caspa and Rusko restocks at the bottom of the mailer too.

Jungle step is here to stay and check Cluekid & LD are leading teh way. Check “I Don’t Wanna Cry” on Cluekid’s Bullfrog Beats label.

Roots steppers should check out 3 promo releases in particular: Kion & Murda Ft. Junior Murvin ‘Number 1 Sound / Tes La Rok Remix on Little Island Records [ Audio Link ]. MRK 1’s ‘X-Tatic / Moving Toad’ on Contagious Music and Mungos Hi Fi Ft. Earl 16 / LD ‘International Roots (LD Remix) on Dub Police Records and as featured in N-Type’s Rinse 09 mix.

Drum n Bass crew will want to know about the vinyl release of Alix Perez’s ‘1984′ LP on Shogun Audio. Also wicked to see Consequence’s ‘Live For Never (LP Sampler)’ - his debut release on the forward-thinking Exit Recordings. Digital & Outrage’s joint ‘Red Letter’ LP on Function is definitely a project worth checking. Sub Focus also has his self titled LP released on Ram Records. Liquid crew will want to check the new Calibre on Signature as well as Zero T & (ex pat Kiwi) Mosus Ft. Spikey T on Liquid V.

Mix CD wise there is DJ Marky and friends present: Makato mix.

Kode9 NZ Tour in July

Monday, June 15th, 2009

 Kode9 Christchurch Webflyer

The much anticpated Kode9 tour of Australia and NZ kicks off in a few weeks time.

The absolute evolutionary godfather of dubstep, KODE 9 is on his way to Aotearoa to take everything you thought you knew about the sound and flip it around, bringing you symphony of sonic seduction!

Kode 9 has nurtured dubstep music since day one, shaping its definition through founding the record label HYPERDUB. This imprint has given artists BURIAL, ZOMBY, IKONIKA, FLYING LOTUS and KODE 9 the strong voices needed to deliver an even stronger message: music that drowns out your expectations and resonates with your emotions.

In 2006 the underground music world was astounded by Burials groundbreaking debut, which was awarded ‘Album of the Year’ status by THE WIRE magazine, and described as an absurdly addictive sonic opiate - a feat that would not have been possible without Kode’s support. Out of this success, the HYPERDUB label has brought many ruff and revolutionary artists to our consciousness, and is refusing to adopt a formulaic approach to the sound.

Kode’s critically acclaimed debut album, ‘Memories of the future’ featuring Spaceape, has also been at the forefront of his exploratory approach, establishing his role as an artist, author, and lecturer on audio culture. It’s an interest that spans from grime emcees waging war with a mic to the US army waging war with advanced sonic weaponry. “It’s about the use of sound as a weapon. It’s about collective grass roots, tactical media, pirate radio, network culture, DIY media…”, an attitude that will ensure a night of auditory adventure.

Wellington - Thursday 2nd July

Christchurch - Friday 3rd July

Auckland - Saturday 4th July

For a bit of background on Kode9 check this download of Benji B’s 1Xtra show featuring Kode9 from about 55mins in. There’s also an interview transcript here from UK magazine The Wire.

Monday, May 18th, 2009

Just recieved this from the SAFE crew:

WATCH TV ONE NEWS 6PM TONIGHT!!
Mike King and SAFE challenge Pork Board on Close Up. Location of piggery revealed on One News.

The screening of the Sunday programme on TV One last night, has left much of the New Zealand public stunned and in utter shock. National media attention has been intense with many news items appearing on television, radio, internet sites and newspapers inc.

Tonight TV One News is expected to reveal the identity of the farm and a subsequent story will be on Close Up, featuring Mike King, Hans Kriek from SAFE and a spokesperson for the NZ Pork Industry Board.

Don’t Corrupt Aid

Don't Corrupt Aid

The government, led by the Foreign Affairs Minister, Murray McCully, is about to dismantle New Zealand’s aid program. Whatever your values and belief in international aid, no government should be able to dismantle a programme that uses a substantial amount of tax payer’s money without:
conducting a satisfactory review including the independent reviews that have already been conducted;
consulting specialists in the concerned industry in New Zealand or overseas;
opening up the review process for comment or input by the other political parties, by NZAID staff and their partners in-country, or by the NZ NGO community who administers a percentage of NZ’s aid budget.
McCully’s plan, to be finalised by the end of March, is to bring NZAID back into the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade (MFAT). Ironically this is where it sat before 2001 when all the reviews it received were of inadequate performance for those the aid was aimed at.
